This article is all about being positive. And, I know, the above title really uses all negative words. So, would this be an “oxymoron” title?
But the truth is, we are bombarded every minute of the day with negativity. You hear it on the TV news, radio, social media, newspapers, and from people all around you. How does one overcome all the negativity? The first clue is, “it is not easy!
Good, positive things happen all the time, but do you hear about it? No, you have to look hard to find good news. Bad news sells, good news does not. All the media sources know this and will preach negativity, because it pays the bills.
The idea of this article is give to you some direction to relieve the negativity and promote the positive.
To start, I’m going to present the Seven Laws of the Mind, with the positive and negative thoughts we go through. Every time I think of this as see the Yin/Yang symbol. Yin/Yang is the balancing of everything in life. We need to find balance in the negativity by finding the positive. It is a real challenge.
In the book, Think and Grow Rich, by Napoleon Hill, it states to think of the subconscious mind as a fertile garden spot. When negativity enters, weeds and thorn bushes grow. With the positive, flowers and vegetables grow. The more positive you can put into the subconscious the more beautiful the garden spot becomes.

The Seven Laws of the Mind
Note: I have reordered these from the original version. The new order of these laws is from least important to most important. This ordering is my opinion only.
Law of Growth
“Whatever we think about grows. What we forget atrophies.”
The more you dwell on the positive the more it grows and by dwelling less on the negative, it atrophies.
Law of Dual Thought
“Thought is a combination of ideation and feeling. We can attach any feeling to a thought we want.”
You have the choice to see the positive or the negative in all thoughts. You can easily attach a positive feeling to a thought as you could a negative.
Law of Practice
“Practice makes perfect. The 5Ps - Perfect Practice Prevents Poor Performance. Our bewilderment of magnificence in others, upon further inspection, finds...as John Wooden of UCLA shares 'you'll find most of it is practice, the rest of it is work.' With practice of the correct things, we improve ~ on the other 6 Laws of the Mind.”
The key word in this law is “perfect”. If you can continually practice the idea of positive thoughts and feelings, you will grow that beautiful garden in your mind.
Law of Relaxation
“Mental effort defeats itself ~ exactly the opposite of physical effort. A relaxed, calm state of mind, is the only doorway to progress mentally. Relaxation of thought is the only access to Infinite Intelligence.”
Do not stress yourself into the positive. Relax and present the positive whenever you can. The harder you try to accomplish a positive the more the negativity can creep in.
Law of Subconscious
“As soon as the subconscious accepts the idea it becomes a demand and it works constantly, 24-7, to manifest demand ~ accessing a reservoir of infinite resources.”
This is quite an interesting law. Hill goes into great detail on how to get the subconscious to accept the idea. His basis is somewhat simple. Keep repeating, with emotion and feelings, what you want your subconscious to accept. Eventually the subconscious will embrace your desire. By practicing positive thoughts, slowly, but surely, your subconscious will accept the idea. Once accepted, it will promote the positive.
Something unique will happen as you follow the suggestions in this article. People will start commenting to you that you seem different, in a good way. They will notice the positive demeanor.
Law of Substitution
“We cannot think about 2 things at the same time. If a negative thought enters your mind ~ try to think about God instead. If that is too big a reach at the time, use any fond memory or other pleasant thought. Jesus, the Master Teacher, said, ‘Resist not evil’ ~ meaning turn from it and think about something else instead.”
This law and the next are what I consider to be the most important of the seven. In the course I took on marketing, Think and Grow Rich was part of the study we did. Hill is very big on the positive. One of the exercises we had to do was to go 14 days without a negative thought.
Now, I think of myself as a very positive person, until I did this exercise. I never made it past day 1 and I’m still trying. But, I have become very aware of the negativity around me and in my thoughts. Try to go one day without letting a negative thought enter your mind. You will be surprised at the amount of negativity your mind generates without you even realizing it.
Law of Forgiveness
“To access the Divine and connect the subconscious to the Omnipotent, Omniscient and Omnipresent Creator we must forgive everyone and anyone to clear the channel. There can be no connection to the Divine mind where anger or resentment against a brother or sister, justified or not, exists.”
This law may be the toughest of the seven. Learning to forgive is not easy for humans to do. Keep in mind, forgiveness does not absolve the person of the act they did, it does, though, release you. Also, harboring the negative side of an act can eat away at you. Once you forgive, the positive comes back into play.
I am going to pull a line out of Think and Grow Rich, because it fits right here. This is a good example of how Hill promoted the power of positive thinking.
“I will eliminate hatred, envy, jealousy, selfishness, and cynicism, by developing love for all humanity, because I know that a negative attitude toward others can never bring me success.”
This is from his Self-Confidence Formula. But it is so true, work on removing the negative, like stated above, and promote the positive.
Stop watching or listening to all the negative stuff that belches out of the TV, the radio, on social media, etc.
This is my opinion only, take it for what it is worth to you.
Very little that is in the media actually affects you. By letting the media force the negativity into your mind, you are allowing it to affect you in an unhealthy way. You are letting the weeds and thorn bushes grow.
I turned off the TV service and cancelled the newspaper. To my surprise, I did not miss it one bit. Whatever happens in a foreign nation or across the nation, doesn’t affect you or me, unless you allow it to. The media preys on this negativity to keep their advertisers happy. They do this to get better ratings for paid advertising.
So, to defeat the negativity in a negative world, you need to make the conscious decision to promote the positive to your subconscious. Start building the beautiful garden in your mind.
Work at it daily, one small step at a time. Never end a conversation with a negative thought. Always find something positive in everything you do.
Every time a negative thought enters your mind, no matter how small, replace it with a positive thought.
Keep in mind, that other people in your sphere of influence will still spew negativity, learn to let it roll off. Make yourself aware of the negative thoughts from others. It will help you become more positive.
There is no magic pill here, just work at it daily. I hope these thoughts will bring you a better, positive life and enjoy the journey.
Thank you for stopping by,
